Social Works
Without Borders
At Social Work Without Borders, we measure success by the lives we empower. We are committed to providing daily sustenance, financial assistance, and holistic medical care to seniors and children across Freetown and beyond.
Social Work Without Borders is primarily focused on providing relief and development services within Freetown and its surrounding areas. Our main project activities are strategically located in the eastern part of Freetown.
However, our commitment to the people of Sierra Leone extends beyond the capital. We also operate in provincial areas, where we have spent years supporting local schools and children. Specifically, we have dedicated significant efforts to the Sanda Gbanti Kamaranka Chiefdom, working to improve primary school infrastructure and learning environments for the local community
The foundation of Social Work Without Borders is built on a deep passion for rendering holistic services to communities in need. The organization was established by the founder and CEO, Mr. Samuel Koroma, who was driven by a lifelong commitment to helping vulnerable populations.
The program’s journey began in 2016, initially focusing on providing physical, moral, and financial support to school-going children, particularly those from the provinces. Over time, through consistent visits to Sierra Leone, the focus expanded after noticing a significant gap in the care provided to the elderly. Seeing many seniors struggling on the streets of Freetown prompted the organization to prioritize their holistic well-being, ensuring they receive the healthcare and dignity they deserve.
Sierra Leone’s education system is still recovering from the long-term impacts of past conflicts and the 2014 Ebola outbreak. While significant progress has been made, access to quality education remains a challenge for many. Approximately 30% of school-aged children over 240,000 remain out of school, with the majority being girls in rural areas and those from the poorest households. Many existing schools suffer from overcrowded classrooms, lack of learning materials, and dilapidated infrastructure.
Furthermore, there is a visible lack of support for the elderly population. In Freetown and its surrounding areas, many seniors are left without adequate care, often resulting in them having to beg on the streets for survival. Social Work Without Borders exists to bridge these gaps by providing sustainable, long-term development plans for the educational sector and holistic wellbeing for the elderly.
The primary goal of our projects is to restore and preserve human dignity by providing a conducive environment for both the elderly and the young generation in Sierra Leone. Our main aims include:
Holistic Elderly Care: Providing basic healthcare, physical and psychosocial therapy, and a supportive social environment for the elderly and less privileged.
Youth Empowerment: Empowering children through education, decision-making initiatives, and helping them realize their full potential.
Sustenance and Support: Delivering daily sustenance, financial assistance, and emotional support to ensure no senior is left behind.
Community Development: Supporting self-help programs to improve livelihood security and household viability while protecting the local environment.
Knowledge Integration: Reintroducing the experience of the elderly to help reshape the minds of the younger generation.
To achieve these aims, we focus on measurable actions within our operational areas:
Educational Infrastructure: Constructing and repairing damaged school buildings and providing adequate administrative facilities for pupils.
Learning Resources: Providing essential school furniture, including desks, chairs, blackboards, tables, and cupboards.
Water and Sanitation: Constructing line water wells in damaged schools and building VIP latrines with 6 drop holes to improve hygiene.
Collaboration: Strengthening support links with other NGOs and collaborating with the Government of Sierra Leone and donor partners.
International Relations: Continuing to strengthen healthy relationships and cooperation with international partners to support development in Sierra Leone
